…”AUC ATHEISTS”…

Why Link “AUC” to California ‘s Sexual Consent Bill ?

Why Link “AUC” to California ‘s Sexual Consent Bill ?

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 2.29.27 PM  A photo of  AUC students has been used in Al Youm 7 ‘s recently published news report about California ‘s “Yes means Yes” rule on sexual consent on college campuses.

The main  and only focus of the report is the new law which requires “an affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity”, as part of a law regarding sexual assaults in colleges.

“The State of California approved a law which demands a clear consent to engage in sexual activity in colleges, in order to protect the girls from rape assaults, especially under the effect of drugs and alcohol,” Al Youm 7 ‘s report says.

The report which includes four paragraphs about the “sexual consent” law has no mention of AUC or Egypt in any way, and it does not show any possible link to justify the use of a photo from AUC campus.

The report has angered some of the students, wondering about an intention to send a certain message to the Egyptian community about AUC and its students.

What do you think about this ?

AUC student goes on “open hunger strike” !!!

10622883_987757474572801_7014854322421889684_nIbrahim T. Bebo, a construction engineering junior student at AUC,  announced that he is going on a hunger strike starting today, in solidarity with the Egyptian detainees.

Ibrahim listed  two main objectives of his decision, which are to raise awareness about the cause of the detainees on a hunger strike, and to experience what they are experiencing in prisons.

“I am waiting to see any actual and fair procedures taken at the detainees’ trials. I will try to stay on a hunger strike until they are released,” Ibrahim said to the Insider AUC.

“There are many events that called out for people to support the cause by going on a one-day-hunger strike, but I am starting an open hunger strike and I am doing it independently,” he declared.

Ibrahim referred to the fact that there are many detainees, including activists, clubs’ supporters like the fans of Zamalek football team known as “Ultras White Knights” and many other Egyptians who were “illegally” detained independently for breaking the Egyptian Protest Law.

“I am sure they deserve the support of each and everyone of us, either by starting symbolic hunger strikes or by spreading awareness and telling their stories,” Ibrahim said.

According to Al Ahram state owned newspaper, the hunger strike campaign which was launched last week in solidarity with the Egyptian detainees has gained momentum, as 123 Egyptians are currently on hunger strike both inside and outside the prisons.

The longer hunger striker so far is Muhamed Sultan who  has been on a hunger strike for 227 days inside Tora Prison, while the second longest hunger striker in detainment is Ibrahim El-Yamany, on hunger strike for 146 days now, stated Al- Ahram newspaper.

The public figures on hunger strike include  the mother and sister of political activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah and Sanaa Seif, who are both on hunger strike in prison.

Looking for a safe place to share your concerns ? – Pass by The Ombuds Office …

If you haven’t heard of The Office of the University Ombuds, it is simply that unique place where AUC students, faculty, staff and even parents are invited to go for advice or recommendations regarding their concerns and conflicts.

The term “ombuds” originated in Sweden in 1809, essentially meaning an official appointed to investigate individuals’ complaints against maladministration.

The first USA university ombudsman office was established in the late 60s early 70s, leading to a dramatic growth of this profession in higher education over the past decades. In AUC, the Ombuds office was created in 2012 by Dr. Hanan el Sabea, professor of Anthropology, with Lamia Eid being her successor. “We consider ourselves as a thinking partner to members of the AUC community when they need guidance, coaching or assistance in dealing with their concerns”, Lamia Eid, the University ombuds, clarified to the Insider AUC.

The ombuds deals with a variety of complaints and concerns that include, and are not limited to, misuse of power, cultural differences and sensitivities, bullying, evaluations, and compensation issues for staff or faculty.

Ms. Eid explained to us that the perception and handling of disputes is quite a complex matter. “When it comes to handling issues, the ombuds does not provide direct solutions but rather provides the visitor with a different perspective of viewing a problem,” she said. This is done through asking strategic questions and discussing the matter to provide different approaches for dealing with conflicts.

The office acts as a neutral third party that discusses the benefits and drawbacks of each option with a main objective of empowering the visitor that he/she should be the one making the decision. Another main function of the office is alerting students to the existence of a formal process for a certain policy as many students might be unaware that a certain policy exists.

The Ombuds Office follows the international ombudsman association standards of practice and codes of ethics which are basically 4 major principles: confidentiality, independence, neutrality and informality.

Confidentiality is the fundamental principle of this office. “We cannot disclose any information provided by our visitors except if there is an imminent risk of serious harm nor could we reveal the names or identities of the visitors without their consent” Ms. Eid said, explaining that the logic behind this confidentiality is to ensure to the visitors that this is a safe place where they could share their concerns.

Ms. Eid also underlined the significance of secrecy, “Whatever happens in this office remains in this office, we listen, we discuss but we do not keep records.”

Moreover, the office is independent in structure and function. It remains neutral and impartial on all matters and therefore it does not advocate for any individual or group. It only advocates for the fair process.

Finally, the office is informal; it has no hierarchical structure.

The University Ombuds simplified the whole role of the office by comparing it to visiting an eye doctor when he keeps putting on lenses to test one’s eye sight until being able to see the matter very clearly. “It’s like having additional lenses to make you view things in a better perspective,” Miss Eid concluded.

The Ombuds Office is expected to dramatically impact the AUC community as a whole, mainly through the reduction of major conflicts. It also aims at showing the community that their administration actually cares about them, enforcing the sense of community and making it a more desirable place for its members.

Now that you know all about the Ombuds office, if you have any concerns or complaints, you know where to head !

The office is located on the ground floor of the library building.  You could either access it via the library, ground floor behind the periodicals area or directly from the tree garden between the administration and library buildings – Room G02.

Ongoing negotiations to solve a crisis caused by the University ‘s late payment policy

download (9)Vice President of Student Affairs Khaled Dahawy announced that he cannot take any decisions concerning the issue of the five students who had their summer courses dropped by the administration due to their failure to pay the tuition before the final deadline.

In a meeting with the students this morning, V.P. Dahawy stated that he cannot offer them any solutions and suggested that they email President Lisa Anderson, being the highest authority in the University, a source revealed after the meeting.

The courses were dropped by the administration and the students were withdrawn from their classes for not paying the summer 2014 tuition.

Even though  the students took their final exams and received their grades, they courses cannot appear on the system or in the transcript as they were officially dropped following the University’s late fees policy.

Some students questioned VP Dahawy about a petition which was signed last semester concerning late tuition fees, to which he responded by saying that former provost Amr Sharawy had not accepted any petitions and that it is the right of the University to accept or deny a petition without offering any reasons.

The administration had taken a decision that no late payment petitions will be accepted regardless of the reasons behind it, resulting in many complaints from students who suffered by such decision. As a response the current Student Union had launched a petition to pay late tuition fees on July 10th.

There are still ongoing negotiations with the administration in an attempt from the students to have their courses registered again, and their grades acknowledged in the transcript.

An online dating platform for AUCians… AGAIN

An online dating platform for AUCians… AGAIN

10590657_751482881556443_4364289678401827810_n

A new facebook page entitled “Project DateMe – AUC” was created on August 5th to serve as a “dating platform” for AUCians.

Those interested in trying the project are asked to fill a form to “market for themselves”, “who they are”, and “what they are looking for,” states the description of the page.

The information required in the form include Birthday, gender, whether the person is looking for a long term relationship. a short term relationship, something platonic or casual, sexual orientation, and some choices to choose from to describe who the person is and whom he is looking for including “dorms sleephead, balconies jumper, steps person/wannabe, PVA, car owner, Huss head, …”

Similar pages have been recently created and  led to a great controversy in AUC society. These can include the famous “AUC crushes” which reached more than 20,000 fans in no time, AUC blind dating, and AUC confessions which has frequently referred to the same topic .

The culture of online dating is very stigmatised in Egypt, and is associated with ‘Khaliji’ forums. So this might be a beginning of something new,” said the admin of AUC crushes in a previous interview with The Insider AUC.

“A lot of us are not into games. Either by the society or by the people who we date. Here we fight both. We stand against the stigma of dating especially the online one. Complexity of human interaction?! It’s your call, yet we will help you through our daily tips,” states the description of the project Dateme-AUC.

Some might  believe that these ideas contradict with the Egyptian culture and traditions, some could say that it is just for fun, or that is all about freedom of expression, what do you think?

The scene featuring AUC in “Al Morafa’a” was not authorised by the University.

The producing company of Al Morafa’a tv serial had not approached the American University in Cairo (AUC) in any manner to seek permission before featuring the University in the show, Ms. Reham Saad, Director of Media Relations in AUC, confirmed to The Insider.

Ms Saad was surprised by the role that AUC played in the serial, saying that it was “completely unnecessary and a lame attempt to enact our graduation ceremonies.”

“We even call the ceremony commencement rather than graduation!” She added.

According to Ms Saad, this is not the first time a production has breached the rights of the university, referring to the movie (Saidi Fel Gam’a El Amrekeya), where the producing company was denied permission to film on campus, however, they went ahead and used the name of the university.

“The approval is discussed by different committees; however, the first thing I ask is how would it affect the university? If it is not adding to our message as a university nor our image, then frankly it is a waste of time,” Ms Saad  explained.

On behalf of President Lisa Anderson, Ms Ranya Boraie, chief of staff in the president ‘s office, said that this is clearly a copyright infringement and that the issue has been transferred to the Office of Legal Affairs.

Unsurprisingly though, The Office of Legal Affairs is keeping the investigation process hush-hush and we are yet to hear from them what kind of actions are to be expected.

Ramadan’s new series Al Moraf’a (المرافعة), starring Bassem Yakhour, has used the brand name and logo of our university in its first episode.

The scene, that depicts a graduation ceremony in January 2010, focuses on how an NDP senior member is getting a special treatment and allowed to get through the metal detector though it beeped.
What do you think is the appropriate approach for the situation?

AUC is not unfamiliar with the spotlight. The American University has been part of many television and film productions before whether just by name or usage as an actual set.

Among those productions are El Gam’a (الجامعة) and Se’eedi Fel Gam’a El Amrikeya (صعيدي في الجامعة الأمريكية) and this year is no different.

Ramadan’s new series Al Moraf’a (المرافعة), starring Bassem Yakhour, has used our university in its first episode. Though it is not filmed on AUC campus, the show rather just uses the brand name and logo.

We can’t help but wonder though, how much did our beloved university charge for a couple of minutes of its name and logo on screen. Any guesses?

The scene, that depicts a graduation ceremony in January 2010, focuses on how an NDP senior member is getting a special treatment and allowed to get through the metal detector though it beeped.

What do you think of the scene? Watch it below and let us know through the comments.
